It was indeed an honor and my pleasure to deliver the keynote address at the Gala Nite portion of the 20th Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers in Lagos on Friday night, October 28th, 2016.
The theme of the conference was “Building New Pillars, Creating New Values for Sustainable Development” and my speech spoke directly to that.
The Nigerian Stock Exchange is a relatively young and still developing economic instrument, which at present does not depict a full picture of the entire economy. There is a a pressing need to focus on the development of a legitimate and trustworthy Stock Exchange. The impact of which will be seen in investor confidence, domestic and foreign. However, much like “sustainable development”, this requires the clarification of definitions and measures to fit the local Nigerian context.
If managed well, there is great potential for the Stock Exchange to serve a checks and balances function in the economy and better yet, help the economy weather turbulent conditions, much like the present recession.
