Nigeria turned 56 this year.
It was an honor to mark this momentous occasion with the congregants at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lagos on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016.
There are many things to be proud of as Nigerians during this independence period, but there are also areas that still need a lot of work and attention.
In September, the United Nations released a report that stated that Nigeria is more divided than ever. These divisions run deep, across ethnic lines, religious differences and socio-economic strata. As we celebrate our independence, we must also somberly reflect on these facts and the implications for Nigeria’s future.
My speech, titled “Celebrating Independence – The Work is not Yet Done” examines Nigeria’s history and our attempts at broad-scale unification and charges religious institutions, especially the Church, to remain committed to the ideals of unity, working together and moving our country forward.
