On Thursday September 22nd, 2016, I was honoured to participate in the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta’s Year 2016 Registry Day, 2nd Distinguished Guest Lecture, Awards and Formal Presentation of Olumo Journal of Professional Administration. I delivered a lecture titled, “Teacher’s Quality, Competitiveness, and Employability: Defining the Roles for College Administrators and Academics. The full text of the speech can be found here.
This is the second time this year I have had the opportunity to deliver a lecture at an Ogun State Institution of Higher Learning. I appreciate every opportunity to engage with the education sector, especially in Ogun. While a Speaker of the House of Representatives, I was in a unique position that allowed for significant investments in education, including and not limited to the construction of classrooms in Ijaiye, Keesi, Abeokuta, Onikolobo and Ake, and at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, a number of construction projects (hostels, colleges, road rehabilitation among others), teaching equipment and a scholarship program. So education is not just something I talk about but what I believe will bring about the greatest positive change in Nigeria.
I would like to thank the students, faculty and staff of FCE, Abeokuta for their warm reception and the presentation of the Doyen of Professional Administration Award. I was greatly impressed by the commitment of the administrators and academics of this fine institution to train teachers of the highest caliber. The drive for excellence at FCE Abeokuta is easily visible in the quality of their students.
It is these high ideals that must be captured across the entire education sector. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, our teachers hold the future of our nation in their hands. We must strive to give the educational system the attention and reform it so badly needs so that together with society, teachers can build the best future for all our children.
